High School Band Syllabus & Rubric
Syllabus & Rubric in Word .doc format
SR. BAND SYLLABUSPlease note that Sr. High band is a curricular/academic class.
ASSESSMENT
Sectional preparation/attendance………………………………..50%
(see enclosed rubric)
Sectionals are an essential part of the curriculum. Most students are scheduled for sectionals during study halls. Students in rotating sectionals should attend sectionals except:
a. if they are below a “C” average in the class that their sectional is scheduled.
b. if a test is scheduled for that class periodWhen students need to miss a sectional, it is important that they come to the band office that day after 2:50 to get their missed assignment. Obviously, students absent from school should see me the next day back in school. 5 points will be deducted from this portion of the student’s grade if he/she misses a sectional and doesn’t see me for the next week’s assignment.
First marking period music assessment will be on the field show music.Rehearsal/Performance participation………………………….50%
This portion of the grade includes classroom participation (having your music and instrument) and attendance at all (after school) rehearsals and performances. If you need to miss an after school rehearsal, I NEED A SIGNED NOTE FROM YOUR PARENT/GUARDIAN PRIOR TO THE ABSENCE.
EXTRA HELP/OFFICE HOURSMornings (non-CPT days) 7AM-7:30AM. CPT days -7:30AM
Everyday 2:50PM-3:30PM
EXPECTATIONS
Musicians are expected to prepare their band and lesson material weekly. On the average, this will require 2-3 nights of home practice for 20 minutes per session, especially in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th marking periods. Our goal is to create an exciting and educational musical experience for each musician. To achieve this goal, each member of every ensemble needs to be individually prepared for rehearsals.
It is highly recommended that band members take advantage of the Music Lab and the Smart Music accompaniment system. There is a lot of wonderful music software. Students can use sequencing software and electronic accompaniments that are quite good. I will be more than willing to assist any student who has the desire to work in the lab or with Smart Music.
